I Thought Friendship Was Forever

We were friends once,
You and I.
In good times or bad,
We face life side by side.

Time passed,
The day came when we had to part.
We both promised to call.
Neither ever did.

I grew up, and though
I had other friends,
I always wound up alone,
Outside, looking in.

I tried to contact you,
Finally you called.
But I had changed, and so had you.
I just didn't realize it then.

Once, we were so alike,
People thought us twins.
But, though on the outside, little has changed,
We're not the same within.

Your eyes glint no more in harmless mischief,
I can see the pain inside.
You act out in ways I don't understand,
And when faced with reality, you run and hide.

You say you're still my best friend,
But the lies have made me unsure.
I wish you still trusted me.
I don't know you anymore.

We were best friends once, you and I.
But now I have to face the fact that
The girl I searched so hard to find,
Is no longer the friend I left behind.
